Sultan Declares Saturday as First Day of Ramadan

Ramadan, When Does Muslim Fasting Start? Everything You Need to Know

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has officially declared Saturday, March 1, 2025, as the first day of Ramadan 1446AH. This announcement was made after the Sultanate Council meeting on Ramadan moon sighting, where the Sultan received reports from the moon sighting community confirming the sighting of the new moon from various states and organizations.

The declaration marks the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, a period of fasting, reflection, and spiritual growth for Muslims around the world. During this month, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from food and drink, and engage in increased acts of worship, charity, and good deeds.

The Sultan urged Muslims in the country to devote themselves to worshiping Allah and pray for the country’s peace, stability, and prosperity. He also called on Muslims to use the period of Ramadan to reflect on their lives, seek forgiveness from Allah, and strengthen their bond with their creator.

The declaration was made after the Sultan received reports from various moon sighting committees across the country, confirming the sighting of the new moon. The Sultanate Council, in accordance with Islamic tradition, relies on the physical sighting of the new moon to declare the start of Ramadan.

As Muslims begin their fasting and spiritual observances, they are reminded of the importance of Ramadan as a month of spiritual rejuvenation, self-reflection, and communal solidarity. The Sultan’s declaration serves as a call to action for Muslims to come together, support one another, and strive for a deeper connection with their faith.

With the start of Ramadan, Muslims around the world will embark on a journey of spiritual growth, self-improvement, and devotion to their faith. As they fast, pray, and engage in acts of charity, they will be reminded of the values of compassion, empathy, and kindness that are at the heart of the Islamic faith.
