The Russians have released Brittney Griner in exchange for Viktor Bout a Russian merchant of death.
With all the rhetoric going on between Russia and US government, it’s sometimes hard to know what to believe.
But a story about Russian authorities releasing an American basketball player in exchange for Viktor Bout know as the merchant of death is not one you can easily dismiss as fake. And that’s because there are actually some facts behind it:
- Griner was arrested after discovering cannabis in her luggages arriving for a basketball game; she denies wrongdoing and insists that she was set up and was detained since February.
While some people were surprised to see a basketball player released in exchange for a difficult to catch criminal, others were not surprised at all.
While some people were surprised to see a basketball player released in exchange for a difficult to catch criminal, others were not surprised at all. The US government was not surprised that Russia did not want Griner back; the Russian government was also not surprised by this turn of events. They understood that their actions would be met with retaliation from America and they were prepared for it.
While these two governments may have been negotiating over how best to keep both sides happy, their respective citizens watched with excitement as their leaders worked together against common enemies: terrorism and terrorists!
“Of course President Putin would do this”, said one analyst. “He doesn’t want to piss off America any more than he already has.”
The US and Russia are not on good terms, with the US Government consistently criticizing his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, calling for peace between the two countries Russia and Ukrain.
The Russians are not above releasing criminals in order to save face. This is what happened with Griner.
And now that Griner has been released from prison, it appears that Russia is trying to do the same thing again with a US citizen named Pugh, who has been sentenced to 14 years for drug trafficking violations. He was arrested in Russia for possession of guns and ammunition—but according to his lawyer, he was using them for self-defense against kidnappers who tried stealing his money!
