The Digital Economy Initiative seeks to create an enabling environment for the creation of at least one million employment opportunities for Nigerians in the next three years.
The UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) reported that unemployment rate in Nigeria was 19.2% in 2017. This figure is expected to increase to 26% by 2022 and 33% by 2030, if no intervention is taken to address this issue.
Nigerian graduates are also under-employed due to lack of access to jobs and skills training programs that would enable them get jobs in their field of study after graduation. The National Employer’s Survey conducted by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) revealed that 60% of employers were having difficulty filling vacant positions due to inadequate competency standards or lack of talent available locally which resulted into increased salaries being paid as incentive packages instead of hiring new staff members with specific skill sets required for particular positions offered by these companies.”
NITDA said the initiative was in line with its mandate to develop IT capacity and capability in Nigeria by training manpower, as well as facilitating access to IT knowledge to create wealth.
